The Wallet & The List

Think of these as your shopping sidekicks. They will help you more than your friend can do, so if your friend is not with you, it will be ok. But these should be with you all the time during the shopping of clothes.

1. Shopping Without a Budget :

This is the ultimate rookie mistake. It\’s so easy to get carried away by a cute top or a pair of trendy jeans or an oversized T-Shirt. Also if any cloth is in trend and is out of your budget, try not to buy it beacuse in the end your wallet or bank account has to be sacrificed.

And you know how today\’s trends are, every week or month there is a new trend. In the end, that cloth will be out of the trend but you can\’t have the money you spend on that cloth just because of the sake of trend or showing off to others.

But if you really like that tshirt, jeans or shirt and it is in trend and out of your budget, wait for some time. When the trend is over, the price will automatically be reduced in most of the cases. Before you even think about shopping, decide till what limit you can spend and stick to it.

A Pro tip from me: Take only that amount in cash so you literally can\’t overspend.

2. Forgetting to Check Your Closet :

We\’ve all been there—you buy a cool new jacket, get home, and realize you already have two just like it. Do a quick inventory of your closet before you shop to avoid buying duplicates of what you already own.

A pro tip from me : Write everything your closet already has like the number of jeans or t shirts or shirts and also of which color you have in the notes of your mobile before you go out for shopping of clothes. In shirt, you can also mention the type or of what design it has.

For example : T shirts – 4 – White, yellow, black, brown etc
Shirts – 5 – [white- plane], [black-Glossy], cream, grey, maroon etc
Jeans – 3 – Sky blue, Brown, Black etc

From this you will have a clear perspective of what you have already and what new you can buy. This will save your money and also the regret of buying the same thing.

3. Skipping the Return Policy :

Some stores are very expert on how to get their things sold out. When they want to restock the clothes or new items, they first need to clear all the clothes from the previous stock. So they start a sale in which they sold the items with 20% or 30% discount, and sometimes with 50% discount.

But that “final sale” rack is a total trap if you don’t know the rules. Always double-check a store’s return policy. In some cases or most of the cases, they don’t have a return policy during sale. So after shopping from sale if you get home and the fit is all wrong, you will get stuck with a useless item.

A pro tip from me : When you enter the store, first always ask about the return policy to any worker. If from website, first go to the return policy section and read those policies.

Mind Games & Impulse Buys

Shopping isn’t just about money; it’s about psychology. In big companies, there is a whole department for the study of the psycology of consumers. In that they design and plan on how to get more customers buy that thing. Don’t let your mood or the store’s tricks make you spend.

1. Shopping When You’re Stressed or Bored :

If you are shopping when you are stressed or bored, it is also called “retail therapy”. When you are stressed from your work load or college assignments, sometimes a thought comes to your mind of going out to buy some clothes. These thoughts are just because of the boredom and stress you feel. The mind give this thoughts so that you can feel light.

But buying things just to cheer yourself up usually leads to a different kind of stress later when you look at your bank account. That one tshirt or shirt or anything you bought, due to that, it will lead to a greater regret.

A pro tip from me : Whenever you thought of going out to buy some clothes, try not to go and check your wardrobe and your bank account. After that ask yourself this question, “Is it still necessary to go out to buy clothes?”.

2. The “Checkout Line” Trap :

When you are waiting in the cue of the cash register for the billing, you had seen those little trinkets and accessories by the register. They are there for a reason!, these items are placed where you have nothing to do but stand and wait. So your mind needs something. That is when you are trapped in the Checkout Line trap.

They’re designed to be a last-minute impulse buy. They are small things that are very cheap so your mind thinks that let’s try this, But Don’t fall for it. You don’t need that mini size perfume or those funky earrings unless they were on your list.

A pro tip from me : Stick to your list and your budget. Don’t even look at the items near the register. Look at your phone, review your shopping list, or anything. Also keep the other tips that i have mention before and after, in your mind. If you keep following the tips, you can never be trapped in that sneaky trap.

3. Shopping When You’re Tired :

When you come home after going to office, college, gym or anyplace, your body and mind need rest. And if you are directly going for the shopping, you are doing a big mistake. When you’re exhausted, you’re more likely to make a quick or poor decision just to get it over with. Save your shopping trips for when you have enough energy to be selective and try things on.

A pro tip from me : What you can do is you can go during weekends or holidays when you have no work to do. By this you can make a better decision when your mind is fresh and cool (Without stress).

Also i recommend you to go for shopping in the morning when the store opens. This is because when you go during holidays or weekends, there are other people also so the wait time in cue and changing room increases. Also the workers are free during early times as no one is there so they can help you more efficiently.

The Practical Stuff

These mistakes might seem small, but they can make a huge difference in your shopping experience.

1. Ignoring Your Student ID :

These mistake is done by so many students. How can you forget that the student ID of your college (I know you don’t like your college), but that student ID will save you dozens of money. I urge all the students who are going to college , don’t miss out on those sweet student discounts! Always ask if a store offers a special price for students.

A pro advice from me : A few extra bucks saved on each item adds up fast. Especially for the students who have fixed pocket money or are doing a part time job.

Most of the students don’t know how many stores give the student discount. So my next blog will be about how many companies in the world are giving the student discount and of how much. All the information will be there, so you don’t have to go to other websites.

2. Not Trying Things On :

Seriously, don’t skip this. When you like a shirt or tshirt, you are seeing that shirt or tshirt with hanger or on mannequin but remember shirt might look great on the mannequin or the model, but the fit is everything. Your chest size or shoulder size can vary of the hanger size so trying something on is the only way to know if it’s truly a good purchase.

Most people try the clothes by just adding them over their own clothes, don’t do that. If you are doing just for the clearity, if the shirt is looking good or not on me, then try them.

A pro tip from me : First select all the clothes you like, and then take them with you in the changing room and try them on. It will be more efficient than selecting a t-shirt, trying that, then select another shirt and trying, that will take too much time and energy.

I know this tip sounds very basic and that is why most people ignore it.

3. Wearing Uncomfortable Clothes :

Okay you have collected all your clothes which you like and you are in the changing room, and if you have worn clothes that are tight then nothing will make you hate shopping faster than trying to squeeze in and out of tight jeans or untie complicated shoes in a dressing room.

I know you have to look good while shopping if you are going with your girlfriend or boyfriend, but trust me waiting for you to come out will hate them most because obviously it will take time to take off that tight jeans.

Wear something comfortable and easy to change out of so you can try on lots of options.

A pro tip from me : Wear joggers, a T-shirt. Also shoes which are easy to slip on.

FAQs

Q1: How can I stop myself from impulse buying?
A : The best way to stop impulse buying is to set a strict budget and use the “24-hour rule.” If you see something you want, wait a full day before you buy it. Most of the time, the urge will pass.

Q2: What should I wear when I go shopping?
A : Wear comfortable, easy-to-remove clothing and shoes. Think slip-ons, a simple top, and stretchy bottoms. This makes it so much easier and faster to try on clothes without getting frustrated.

Q3: Is it better to shop alone or with friends?
A : Shopping with friends can be fun, but if you have a specific goal, shopping alone is often more effective. Friends can be a distraction and might encourage you to buy things you don’t need.

Q4: Should I buy things online or in person?
A : Both have pros and cons. Online shopping is convenient and often has more sales, but it can be hard to judge the fit and quality. In-person shopping lets you try things on, which helps prevent returns. It’s best to do both strategically!

Q5: Should I buy basics or trendy pieces first?
A : Always start with the basics! Building a wardrobe of versatile, timeless essentials like a good pair of jeans, a classic white shirt, and a neutral jacket gives you a strong foundation. You can then add a few trendy pieces to mix and match with your basics without having to buy a whole new outfit every time a trend changes.

Q6: How can I build a versatile wardrobe on a tight budget?
A : Focus on small collection of clothes that can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits. Stick to a neutral color palette (like black, white, gray, and beige) and invest in high-quality basics. You can also explore thrift stores and secondhand apps, which are great for finding unique and durable items at a fraction of the cost.
